Where I stayed
Due to the vagaries of travel I had an extra day somewhere before Frankfurt. I had already booked an extra night in Frankfurt so decided to stay an extra night in Lille. Not that I was going to see any more of the fourth biggest town in France. No, we were using it as a convenient (and cheap) launching point for Belgium.
We set off to Ghent. Now it was a national holiday in Belgium so things were a bit atypical. There were stalls just getting set up and streets being swept from the festivities of the night before (seems a national holiday spills over into several days). We had to walk around to try and find the houses with the stepped gables (crinkly bits I call them) which are so distinctive in northern towns. They are lovely although the weather did not cooperate and was a little overcast.
We found a cafe and had some great Belgium waffles. Crunchy on the outside but warm and light on the inside. Covered with cream and chocolate sauce this was a great start. So that was morning tea, ....... Now off to another town for dinner.
We caught the train to Bruges, a lovely preserved town with wonderful architecture. He sun was now shinning and we celebrated with hot chips, another specialty of the town. A walk around the town and I had to stop myself from taking photos. Everything was just picture postcard stuff.
We took a boat ride and it was lovely, more lovely houses along the canals. Hope the pictures do it justice. A lunch of fish and chips with good belgium beer and then more Belgian chocolates. Now that's a well balanced lunch.

When you get back you really must treat yourself to a great movie. In Bruge. Having been there you will probably enjoy it more.
