Cologne was just a way to get to Lille, France. We got in about2pm and had a kebab. The kebabs here are sliced off the same giant meat skewer but are served in crispy hamburger type buns rather than the wraps we use. Still very nice and the cheapest thing around. They have replaced the bratwurst as Germans most popular take away food.

From there it was the cathedral, covieiently located about 200m from our hostel. It is BIG, no really really BIG. It's like they built a cathedral to the usual cathedral height and said 'Let's double it!' and went on to extend the walls to fit another cathedral inside. The footprint is about normal it's just the rudiculous height. I spoke to a nice elderly English lady who was of the opinion that the height had destroyed any aesthetic appeal of the building. I suggested 'trying too hard' and she readily agreed.

My back was still sore so it w a gentile ramble to the water and views of the city. The bridge across has the worst case of padlock cancer we have seen. I don't know where it started but people now buy padlocks with the names of the two lovers and padlock hen to all sorts of structures. In china they have them at the tops of mountains or beside rivers. In Europe it's usually bridges. I guess it symbolses that those two people will be locked together for ever and the location was somehow important in that. What gets me are the cheap skates who buy a cheap lock and just write the names on in pen. You can easily walk back and wipe it off so how much commitment it that??

There were a few sights that we had to see. We went to a perfume factory which was famous for producing.......you guessed it.......Eau do Cologne. From there is was a short stroll to an area of old houses. Seems Napoleon was an ordered sort of fellow and had all the houses numbered. One house was 4,711 in his census. It produced a perfume and called it ...... 4711.

You might think that our stay in Cologne was brief but at least we spent a night there. The next day we were off to Brussels ......see that city..... And then on to Lille where we spend three nights.

We went to the supermarket and ate in, then it was time for bed before we travel to Brussels.
