We wondered, this morning, if Day 13 would actually bring along superstitious ill-fated events. In small ways, yes.
Though we were sad to leave Albuquerque and Loretta's hospitality (and company) this morning, we were excited about going to the Acoma Pueblo, on the Acoma reservation (about 70 miles west of Albuquerque). Winkie had been to the pueblo on a previous trip to New Mexico, but it was Julia's first time there. We arrived just as the 2:30 tour filled up and left, and were informed that the 3:30 tour was already booked full by a private party, and the 4:30 tour was the next available trip up to the pueblo and artisan community on the mesa. Waiting two hours was not an option, as we still had to make it to Flagstaff for the night, which was still a good 200 miles away. With disappointment in our hearts, we got back on I-40 and continued westwards, vowing to come back to New Mexico one day and see the pueblo.
However, since we now had a little time in our day, we decided to stop for a late lunch and some shopping in Gallup, NM. Lunch was at the tasty but fairly vacant Eagle Cafe; we then wandered next door to (the famous) Richardson's Trading Co. & Pawn Shop. Gallup made for a nice little stop, but still doesn't make up for missing Acoma. (Also, we got caught in the rain while walking around outside -- more unlucky Day 13-ness possibly??)
The rest of our drive to Flagstaff was pleasant, if relatively uneventful. We got to witness yet another spectacular desert sunset, this time in the next state to the west. Also, we stopped at the Jackrabbit -- a large jackrabbit sculpture at a small gas station (with the obligatory gift shop, of course). It was cute, and the quintessential crazy roadside attraction we've been seeking out this entire trip.
