We managed to get an inordinate amount of stuff packed in the car(yay!) in only half an hour (oy!) thanks to Dad/Ernie (yay!), and finally got on the road around 3pm. After enjoying some delicious sandwiches, we headed towards Harpers Ferry, WV, by way of Frederick, MD. We started the trip well, by breaking one of our two rules/goals: taking the interstate. The idea was, it's only Maryland, we've lived here, it doesn't matter. Besides I-70 goes through some pretty rural country anyway. We made up for it later by taking a gravel forest path after stopping in Harpers Ferry (which we later discovered was a route some Confederate soldiers had force-marched to Sharpsburg/Antietam), and ended up making a big wandering loop through the West Virginia countryside, admiring all the local cows and goats.
Finally we got back on a "road with numbers" by passing under the clearly marked "No What?" underpass (thanks West Virginia, for your FANTASTIC invisible road signs) and continued on our loosely defined course. We headed down towards Charlottesville, taking a variety of scenic and secondary roads with great views of the mountains and trees. It's easy to forget how many stars come out at night, and we were suitably amazed by the night sky away from all the city lights.
So for now, we say adieu, cozy in our cheap motel room in Charlottesville. Tomorrow will hold (we hope) a trip to Monticello, a visit with Stuart (Julia's high school friend at UVA), and some exploration of the Appalachian Trail.

p.s. Dinosaur Land was closed. Awww rats.

Thankfully, there WILL be a SECOND leg. Bipeds only allowed! I'm having GREAT fun traveling along with two of my favorite galpals. Your commentary has saved me a trip to the local library...
