In the bus
The following day we went to Monument valley which is basically a big Navajo Indian Reservation. But on our way from Goosenecks where we had camped the previous evening we stopped at an amazing view of Monument Valley made famous in Forrest Gump in which Forrest finally turns back after his huge marathon. Not a big fan of the film (or Hanks!) but still an amazing landscape! (See picture)
At Monument Valley some of opted to go on a jeep tour and others went horseback riding, whilst a very small minority did nothing. I did the Jeep riding as I didn't want to get too hot in jeans, but as it turned out it was quite a coolish day anyway, in which we even saw some rain. I was quite surprised by this, but it's apparently normal for this time of year. However saw some cool buttes and mesa's, which are effectively large chunks of rock still remaining from millions of years of erosion
Afterwards we went for a swim in Lake Powell which was next to the town of Page and met some strange local boys who were also Indian but quite screwed up, well they were very friendly at least which was good.
That evening we went out in Page after performing another miracle, had I had pissa at a great Italian restaurant with several others from the bus. We then met several more from the tour at the dodgiest bowling alley I have ever been to. Basically only two of the lanes worked and the place was in such a bad state they didn't mind punters bowling in their own shoes, flip-flops (thongs) or even barefoot. They did provide shoe hire but given the state of the place I wasn't going to try that! After bowling we went to a Kareoke bar and were again impressed by Jimmy's entertainment skills as he belted out some great tunes. He even got a few of us up to help him do Bohemian Rhapsody. Unfortunately we had to drive all night before starting our morning hike down into the Grand Canyon otherwise I think we would have all been up for a bigger night.
