The hour ride out to Cu Chi provided some glimpses of the countryside typified of Vietnam - rice paddies, shanty huts, more rice paddies. But what was also apparent is the emerging industrialization, nothing in comparison to China of course, but new large factory compounds in a similar vein are evident.
Our first stop was a handcraft factory where most of the employees had some form of disability as a result of the war. Their handcrafts are fantastic. It's sobering to imagine the fire and blood that streamed through this area a few years back.
The tunnels themselves are ingenious (their history dating back to the 1940's) and after crawling through a couple hundred metres of them it is impossible to imagine living in them for months at a time. The resourcefulness and ingenuity of the VC in defying the invaders is truly amazing, and deserving of their victory.
Back in HCMC we enjoyed the contrast of the rooftop bar (Saigon Saigon) for a few Mai Tais, taking in the city night scope before hitting the bar scene again...
