Across on the east coast lies Sandakan. A small, concrete box-apartment styled town (with lots of waterfront construction going on) near to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehab Centre (they too must have strayed from the Koran!). These are great creatures to watch at feeding time, and from what the movie screened there shows, the centre does a great job.

A further 5 hours south is another basic little town called Semporan, though it has more character to it than Sandakan. There's also a great little water village here where you can eat, drink, sleep as well as watch the German F1 if you not out DIVING!

Palau Sipadan is the most famous island in the area, and apparently among top 10 best dive spots in the world. And it was good! There were huge (1-2m) turtles everywhere, a few white tip sharks and other interesting fish, and quite good coral on each of my 3 dives.

Borneo (particularly Brunei) has always been one of those mystery places that I knew I would have to one day discover. The last 27 days here have been great, one day I'll get to the southern two-thirds (Indonesian Kalimantan) of this big island. But now it's time to check out another mystery place, The Philippines.

....Well, you should never speak (let alone write) too soon... The flight to the Philippines was cancelled. So, instead of waiting another 3 days for the next flight (which could also be cancelled) we got a flight back to Kota Kinablu where, after 2 months of looking after my travel buddy, Jon, I took off alone to Hong Kong...

More pics & dive shots now uploaded.
