Flag of Mexico  , Northern Mexico,
Friday, January 23, 2009

Today was the best yet. After leaving Fort Stockton it was a clear ride to the Mexico border wth very beautiful views of rock and more rock.
Around lunch time I crossed into Mexico at Presidio, Texas/Ojinaga, Mexico. All went very well, especially because a gentleman called Manuel helped me with the translation. The steps were 1) get Tourist Card at one counter 2) Get copies of drivers licence, bike registration, passport and tourist card 3) Get the Temporary Vehicle Importation Certificate and attach it to the windshield. This all took about 45 minutes.
Then on we go onto Highway 16 and I had a choice of the toll road or the free road. I took the free road as it would wind through the mountains and give me more flavour of the country.
I filled up with gas successfully. It is about $.80 per litre. Yes, that is half of what we are paying in Canada.
By 3:30 I was feeling a bit burnt out so I stopped in Chihuahua and after a lot of looking found the Hotel Del Sol for $25.00 and was able to park the bike right outside my door. The people here are very generous with their time and had a young girl help with the translation.
I am sending this from an internet cafe and it is very very busy.

Today I rode 492 KM

Buenas Tardes
Yes after noon.looking good so far.Glad you can park your bike so close. Chihuahua is where a friend from church had a farm (looks pretty dry) and the owner was kidnapped a few weeks ago. he got away and is here now.All looks calm right now. You are in my prayers. There are Mennonite colonies near you.

Fuel price?
I found your gas price quote somewhat confusing. Gas is $.75 a litre in Ottawa, and you said $.80 in Mexico is half our cost?
That bit of carping aside, I am enjoying your blog and pics, as always, and am very envious. In 2008 I spent about 15 weeks travelling with one form of transport or another, but it is never enough, and there are still so many places to experience.
