After the nice stay in Valentine I headed down to Sydney to do some serious sightseeing.
I basically had 2 days to pack everything in that I wanted to do, since my 3rd day in Sydney would be devoted to the fireworks show for NYE.

After arriving on train on my first day I settled in for about an hour then walked through the botanical gardens on my way to the opera house and circular quay. There were over a hundred thousand fruit bats just hanging around in the gardens which was... interesting.

The opera house is spectacular, it is one thing to see a picture of it but to actually be there and walk around it was quite an experience. The views of the harbour bridge are also quite amazing. I then headed down to circular quay and caught a ferry out to Watson's Bay and walked around there for a bit. It was pretty neat and got to see a place called the Gap which are some famous cliffs.

After that I headed back to the harbour, and caught another ferry to Manly beach, the second most famous beach in Sydney. Lot of backpackers and surfing there. I stayed till it was dark then came back on the ferry to get some night views of the opera house and bridge.

The next day woke up early to do the 7km walk from Bronte beach to the most famous beach in Australia, Bondi. The walk was fantastic and the cliffs and beaches are spectacular. After winding down from that I walked into downtown Sydney again, up on to the Harbour Bridge and headed up the Pylons, the famous lookout from the bridge. A quick 2 hour trip to the aquarium after that to see the sharks and dugongs and reef exhibition as well.

The last day of 2009 I spent sitting around in a park for 6 hours waiting for the NYE fireworks. The wait was worth it though, as the entire Sydney harbour is lit up with fireworks going off from 10 different places and the harbour bridge being completely lit up with fireworks going off the top and bottom of it! Pretty amazing!

Best wishes for 2010 everyone.
