I met my host family that I was staying with for the week and had a little tour around their property. They had just moved in 6 weeks earlier onto a nice lush property that was 6 acres. Unfortunately the previous owners had not maintained the property for ohidunno... 20 years, so needless to say, it was <slightly> overgrown.
So over the course of the week I helped my host family chop, prune, weed, mow, and demolish anything that needed to be removed basically. It was good hard work, but I also had a lot of fun and learned quite a bit about permaculture
The house had a great veranda that Australian King parrots would visit every night looking for food, and I was pleasantly surprised to find they had no problem landing on your hand and eating.
There was wonderful food all week, and I also had a few days off to wander around the Sanctuary down the road which was an amazing zoo where you could interact with the animals, pet the kangaroos, etc.
I have wonderful memories of my time in Healesville including but not limited to: the invention of Canadian all-day banana, peanut butter & blackberry swirl cake (delicious), the parrots, the late night talks, quickly adapting to not having any television access and actually liking it, the great Harraldo, the Rosella feeding frenzy at Yarra Ranges park, using t-shirts to knock over tree stumps and the ensuing hilarity, homemade slingshots, boxes of birds, trying to devise clever ways to keep the dog on the veranda, schnitlau and the German girls, the most unique meal ever (steamed fat hen with randangdangdang fish curry) (also delicious), and way too much pepsi max. Oh and I also ate some kangaroo, quite a tasty treat.
Great week overall and I met some wonderful people.
Off to visit cousins for Christmas!
