Between Parma and La Spezia (the longest of the 3 segments) there was only 2nd class available on the train, so we had booked the whole trip as 2nd. On Trenitalia there isn't a big cost difference between 1st and 2nd, not like airlines at all, and we learned that the seating quality has more to do with the train than just which class you are in, too. 2nd class is great on a nicer newer train. But when we had 1st on the Milan to Rapallo ride it was nice to have a separate compartment with 6 seats although we missed Jean and Vonda who were in another compartment.
No compartments on the way to Bologna.
