Flag of United States  , California
Wednesday, May 16, 2007

I made it across to California after a relaxing flight and headed out to Hermosa Beach, which is close to LA. I spent two nights at a cool hostel there - my first US hostel experience, and it was a good time. I was thinking about taking a tour of Hollywood but decided not to although I did see Frank Gifford (former football player/commentator and former husband to Kathy-Lee) at LAX, and then saw the host of Fear Factor in the bathroom at Starbucks...a range of Fear Factor/bathroom jokes popped into my head, but I was able to resist temptation and think I appeared less creepy for doing so.

I'm out in San Diego now - got picked up from the bus station by my friend from my friend from high school Lizzy and was brought out by her and her friends to a Mother's Day barbecue that rivals any food experience I've had in months. San Diego is as close to a perfect city as one could hope for. By the beach, great weather, nice people, tasty Mexican food and cheap sushi restaurants, and many opportunities to quote lines from Anchorman. I could see myself living here.

San Francisco is my next destination, and I'm excited to see it after hearing songs about it, reading a lot about the city and watching too many episodes of Full House to admit freely. After that I'm Chicago-bound, and I should be getting into town early next week.

Being back in the States after eight months away has made me realize a few things: I like having an accent to most people I meet, the penny really needs to be phased out here, and New Zealand needs good Mexican food to be a better nation. I could also comment on relative beer prices, but that could open an international tribunal.
