The odd relationship between man and nature (and progress) grow more pronounced in Mammoth and Geyser Country. Yellowstone's fame stems from its thermal formations as much as anything and the diversity of geology is astonishing.
Imagining the first explorers of a given culture in these lands is tough. The terrain is barren; steam rises at random intervals and only the twisted remains of the few gritty pines that tried to hack it even hint that life is possible. In earlier times, traveling this country would require fortitude, or a fascination with the abonination. Superstition and fear abounded.
Today, we have boardwalks and scientific explanations for the colorful, the explosive and the smelly. It's nice that we know what we do, and nicer that we have the technology and prosperity that allows so many people to come face to face with some of nature's most extreme landscapes. That being said, the explorer in me chokes up at the thought that so little seems unknown or mysterious.
