We are heading for Puerto Madryn, a day and night sail from Montevideo. The sea is a little rough, but the Veendam is well suited to these Conditions. A little bit of movement but not much swell. Apparently the forecast is not conducive to a landing in the Falklands, so the Captain has made the decision not to go there. A shame but Puerto Madryn sounds like an interesting alternative.

A sea day today, lots of activities to choose from. This morning I have chosen a lecture on making the most of the southern parts of South America, then a cooking demonstration in the wonderful Culinary Arts Centre. (Yummy Lobster Salad and Creme Brûlée). Later a lecture on Pelagic Birds, then a class to learn a few basic words and phrases in Spanish. Happy hour from 4-5pm then a rest before dinner and possibly a show. As you can see there is plenty to occupy oneself. The Library on board is wonderful and Peter can generally be found there most days.

Arrival into Puerto Madryn was at 8am this morning. A nice looking port, very flat and looks quite barren outside of the town. It is predominantly a sea side resort town. A huge beach along the whole foreshore. Not on a par with our beaches though. There are many dogs wandering the streets, they seem to love their dogs, even the strays are well fed and cared for. We wandered the foreshore and looked at the downtown. South Americans are well dressed and love fashion. As we returned to the ship we notice Southern sea lions lounging on the dock. The main breeding grounds for these creatures are just a few miles down the coast.

We depart Puerto Madryn this evening at 6 pm. Another sea day before arriving in Punta Arenas.
