I had an entry in my written journal after my first day of Spanish school but I'm pretty sure the administrators of this site won't permit me to use that kind of language here. Oh boy, do I feel lost!!!! The teacher, Gaby, is super nice but the class is in entirely in Spanish, maybe she speaks about 5% in English to me, not because she doesn't speak English but so that I will learn. My concern is how will I learn if I can't understand the questions, answers or explanations!!! I've been doing ok with the homework part but the oral part in class is killing me!!

Jan (Yan) from school, took me downtown this afternoon (just another big, crowded city). He gave me a crash course on what to do in an earthquake! He says there is a tremor once a month so maybe I'll get to experience that while I'm here! He also put me on a bus home.... all by myself. To pay for the ride, you don't just drop your coins into an auto counter - you hand your money to the drive who then puts it in a wooden box with all the spots for each coin and he will hand you change back if needed. Simple but it works. I guess it would never break down or have coins get stuck anywhere!

My observations in Costa Rica so far... some weird; some just different:
- there's a security guard at Levi's office building with a GUN -- por qué? Didn't know that denim needed that much protection.
- Costa Rica is not that into sidewalks either (same as Guatemala).
- People don't walk facing the traffic. They walk wherever it's convenient for them but I'm always reminded that cars won't stop or slow down for pedestrians. Crazy!
- San Jose also has a Hooters restaurant! (yes, it's true, Robbie)
- People will sell all kinds of stuff (oranges, peppers, trinquets) in the middle of a 2 lane street. They just walk in between the traffic and when the traffic slows when trying to enter the 'roundabout', they will try selling you a bag of oranges!!

What do I miss from back home? My soft bed, hot shower EVERY TIME and Pete's Peanut Pub (not necessarily in that order).
