After a delicious breakfast, we set forth on the long muddy cow-ridden path toward the arts/crafts camp. There were so many kids! They had come from all over the surrounding areas, some walking miles just to be there with us! We introduced ourselves and started off with a few songs before getting into groups based on age of the children. My group had the 7 year olds.
We painted picture frames and then Victor, Quelbyn and I started a frisbee game. Dreamcatchers were made and I helped the kids design them by drawing a flower, sun, and cloud for them to base their dreamcatchers off of. Lunch was served for conjoining groups so the kids got to eat a good meal for free. Some of them wouldnt eat until the next day of arts/crafts camp at lunch, but they didnt seem bothered by it. Great first day!
We ate dinner as a group and had discussion time, talking about what worked and what didnt or what the kids responded to most. Hopefully we have enough donations and supplies! On our way to our host families Heidi and I found a huge toad! We looked around and saw they were everywhere. I eagerly picked one up (course it peed on me) and took a picture. The locals probably thought that was the oddest thing...
At night a few of us gathered near the community center and played with the local kids and talked to some people. Dominoes seems to be a popular game. They brought it to a whole new level while slamming their fist on the table periodically and yelling "BOMBA!" It was great!
