We just checked into our B&B outside of Nelson.  Safe and sound!  Whew.

The weather last night in Golden Bay wasn't too bad - our house was nestled into a hill that provided shelter so the wind and rain just went over us.  The ride over Takaka Hill out of Golden Bay was mostly a rain event and poor visibility.  We got out early enough so there were just the beginning of several rock slides onto the road that Harvey was able to avoid.

In Nelson, we visited with Wanaka Lakes, a dedicated TripAdvisor and a true cultural ambassador for New Zealand.  Wanaka Lakes really helped me a lot in our travel planning and I wanted the opportunity to say "thank you" in person.  Fortunately she obliged.  We met up at her home and we got to meet her cat, Frisbee and her Doberman, Banner, who I had heard about in our private messages - both friendly as can be.  It was a real treat to see how she had transformed her house from the 1880's to create a unique blend of contemporary and of-the-period structural changes, New Zealand art, and furnishings.  It had such a comfortable feel. I loved the big windows and glass doors that let the morning and afternoon light stream in to the house -  but I was more impressed that these custom doors and windows were sized so that the glass height was just perfect for Banner to see out them!  We had an extended lunch at Vics, a local brewery and cafe and shared stories.  Wanaka Lakes is truly an individual who gives to others without expecting anything in return.  How exceptional is that.

After "lunch" that ended around 5 PM, we made our way to our B&B.  It seems as though we were driving INTO the storm as we made our way just outside of Nelson toward the east. Now at the B&B we have driving wind and heavy rain significantly stronger than anything yesterday or today.  By the time we carried our luggage into our room our pants were soaking wet!    Our B&B hosts are Candace and Alan - both warm and welcoming - and a cup of hot tea and a cookie made us settle in nicely.  The wind roared and pelted rain against our windows until about 9:30 PM.  And then quiet.

Such a privilege to meet you both today, J and H. And what a treat to hear some of your great travel stories. I've also been following your Kiwi travels through your well-written blog and lovely photos.

I suspect (and hope!) we will enjoy another long lunch, somewhere, sometime.

Enjoy your last few days in NZ and safe travels home :)
