It is wonderfully soothing to be on a smaller two lane road to Kansas City. Seems like ever since Paducah, KY, the countryside abounded with green rolling hills, small and large farms, horses in white-fenced pastures, and brick colonial homes contrasting with mobile homes from small town to small town.

I turned off the highway to a gravel country road to breathe in some fresh air and watch the black and white cows as they grazed the verdant pasture grasses. Along the road were more of those wildflowers that look like yellow daisies.

I saw an ad to stop in at the Dutch Bakery and Bulk Food Store. When I saw it ahead in the town of Tipton, I pulled in to check it out. Inside the shelves were stocked with every kind of flour, home canned fruits and pickles and fresh bread.
There was a counter where three Amish women, cut cheese and meats for customers. I ordered a sandwich and picked up some molasses cookies and bananas while I waited.  Outside, I stepped around the dozens of potted Mums and headed to the car.  Charlie lept at me as I opened the door, so I took him for a much needed little walk to relieve himself.

From Tipton, I headed back toward Kansas City on Hwy 50 enjoying the rest of the countryside until I got closer to the big city. Once near town, the freeways became numbers that didn’t match my map and I seemed to crisscross the city hopelessly.  I finally took the next exit and phoned a Motel Six who guided me through road construction until I wearily checked in for the rest of the afternoon and night. I am beginning to think I should have gotten a GPS.

Hi Toni, your past 30 days has been soooo full. You still sound full of wonder and surpise at some of the sites you see. I've appreciated how you've shared your experiences through your words and pictures - it's a trip of a lifetime. You're at the gateway to the west - thank goodness you don't have to travel in a covered wagon. Look forward to hearing more details of your trip when we get together next. Julie
