Well here goes....this is my first trial run so hopefully they will get better as time goes by. I arrived in Maastricht on Wednesday morning. I found a hotel in my travel guide....the cheapest one listed....It was a very nice place. It was above a cafe, that turns into a pub at night. The room was very nice though after 10:00 PM the smoke from downstairs had penetrated my room. The second hand smoke of Europe is stifling. The smoke is everywhere, restaurants, shops, the street, pubs, cafes, It is nearly impossible to escape it. The picture I hope to attach to this entry is of the stairs I had to drag my luggage up and down(no elevator).....Three flights of treacherous stairs....my first near death experience...

The days started out a bit rocky as I had not slept nor eaten in the past 30 hours but aside from my sleep things are making a very positive turnaround. I have met most of the other students in my program. There are a lot of Americans from Missouri but others from North Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Georgia, and Illinois. There are also international students from Poland, Hungry, Germany, Mexico and Sweden. I have become good friends with the girl from Sweden---Hanna. She is a Swede through and through.......tall, beautiful and blond! She is very nice and we have a lot in common. Last night we went to the Kulturetheater and say an African Dance performance. It was very intense and primal, I loved it! I think I spent enough time in the pubs last time I was here...this time round I plan to take advantage of more cultural events......don't get me wrong I will still enjoy the pubs....there is a wealth of culture there as well!!

Well I better wrap this up in case it doesn't work and I have to retype the whole thing.
Hope this finds everyone happy and healthy and missing me like crazy!!!!

THe program is called Maastricht Center for Transatlantic Study....I am actually doing the program through UNK, working with Anne Marie. So far things are going well, the first day was rough...I left Andrew at home it was awful leaving him, I spent the first two days crying........
But i have met most of the other people in the program and I am starting to get very excited about the upcoming months. I am going to try and upload some pictures tomorrow....Maastricht is beautiful!!

Vat Gesliggh!!
Hallo, hallo, Joshlyn. Ik zuk de moij broadjes kaas. Translate that if you can... it was pretty much the only Dutch I learned in Holland (that will give you an idea of how easy it is to learn very little Dutch). [smile] Sounds like things are going famously. Be sure to check out the mountain cave where the townspeople hid during the German occupation of WWII (I think it Peterssomething??) - very cool stuff. There are these crazy charcoal drawings on the wall, and one of my favorties (though not charcoal, its in color) is this crazy little Pan-looking goat-dude playing a flute.

Anyway, hope you enjoy your time there. Travel up to Utrecht when you get a chance at see the Dom Tower (not to mention 'the boat' [he, he]). If you find yourself in a coffeeshop in Maastricht that has something called 'Blue Diamond' on the menu, be sure to try it. Just have a quick route home already planned. ;)

Take care.

p.s. Lanceanator, if you are reading this, I hope you are having a mui bueno time in Guatamala. I just bought my motorcycle this week. And '86 Suzuki Intruder 700, complete with custom flame paint job and complete lack of respect for everything else on the road. Can't wait to hit the road with ya, homie.
