So of course any travelling of mine will have to include some of kind of shopping component, and what better way to satisfy this requirement than a visit to the holiest of holies, Milano. Home to numerous sects of my most dear religion, I was enthralld by the likes of Missoni, Prada, Ferragamo and Armani, all of whose blessings I sought as I made the arduous journey through fabled street names like Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga...it still brings tears to my eyes. Some names I didn't even recognize, and indeed even Steph thought I was speaking in tongues as names of various designers rolled off my lips.
We were there for but one night, but we managed to trek around the city quite a bit - again, we SAW a cathedral, we just didn't go into it - the promised land of the Golden Quad (the name of the major shopping arteries) awaited us, and we had no time to spare! The first day there, actually, was dedicated primarly to reconnaissance - what was where, which temples, errr, I mean shops to hit first and how best to spend our shopping time.
That night we indulged in one of my favourite traditions, and one Milano is known for, called Aperitivo. Basically, you go into a bar, buy a drink and a buffet of various finger foods and hors d'oeuvres is included. It usually starts around 5:30/6ish in the evening and carries on until 8:30/9ish, when dinner starts. Steph and I went to a bar called Biciclette where they had a fabulous spread and excellent drinks. We of course folllowed that with a fabulous meal at a resto that served a lot of Lombardy foods and wines (of course the wines!). After dinner we made our way to Corso Como, known for its nightlife, and stumbled upon a bar which was actually a lot of fun if not outrageously expensive! But goods time were had to be sure!
The next day my friends, well, it's hard to put it into words. Steph and I walked those streets as if we were born to be there, soaking in the names, the fabrics, the extravagance of it all! I was fairly modest in my acquisitions, as I reckoned I would still have to eat for the next few months, never mind affording accomodations for future travelling! Mother and father, you will be happy to know that the budget has not been cracked...yet anyway :P But I don't plan any near-future sojourns to this mythical place (indeed, sometimes I'm not even sure it truly exists), but I know I will return again some day, with bigger offerings to leave at these bastions of consumerism and decadence...
