We visited during our 2008 trip to New Zealand and were suitable impressed. The zoo has a great sense of openness, with some fantastically designed enclosures, ensuring the animals feel right at home. The wide range of animals look fit and healthy and seem content and relaxed in their surroundings.
It is a great place for the children to see animals up close without the traditional bars blocking their view, here they have been replaced with glass, or natural barriers such as areas of water. Like so many other zoos, it runs breeding programmes to ensure that these precious creatures will continue to survive on our planet.
The highlight of this particular trip had to be seeing Jelani the giraffe calf who had arrived the previous Friday. He was not out in the enclosure, but with his mum in the giraffe house. However, he seemed to be fascinated with the outdoors and kept coming to the door for a peek!
