After a fairly early morning start and a lovely breakfast we headed off in a taxi to Pier 33 to catch the boat over to Alcatraz.  It was a beautiful morning apart from the bridge being shrouded in fog which lingered around all day.

On arrival at Alcatraz we watched a movie all about the history of the island from the days of the civil War, through to the present day. We then headed off to the cells at the top to do the audio tour, which was brilliant.  I visited Alcatraz many years ago but enjoyed the trip this time around just as much as last time.  The children really enjoyed the audio tour, although they got a little confused with the stopping and starting of the audio system - sometimes they were way in front, other times way behind!  Lucy seemed to really listen though and knew a lot more about Alcatraz by the time we left!

It was really interesting to listen to the voices of the prisoners and their wardens and the stories that they had to tell.  It was fascinating to learn about the escapes and how the wardens lived there with their families.  There were actual children who lived and grew up on the island, travelling every morning to the main land to attend school.  The audio tape also gave you the sound effects which put life back into the prison, rather than it just been an empty shell.  It was a really interesting and enjoyable trip.

Once back on dry land we walked down to the Rainforest Cafe.......again for lunch/dinner as well as some quick shopping in the Gap.

We then caught a cable car down to Union Square for a wander around Macy's and cake and coffee in the terrace bar before walking back to the hotel.
