I got up, had some breakfast and made my way over to the dive shop which supposedly would have some bikes for rent. The bikes they had would be great for Holland. So ugly and crappy that they would not be stolen. Unfortunately this island is hilly and dirtroad only. The tires where soft and could not be pumped up any harder with the makeshift pump made from a scubadiving tank. But this didn't dicourage me, and I set off for my 55 km ride.

The first 10 k's where easy as there where no hills. Unfortunately I couldn't gear back my front deraileur and got stuck with only 5 gears where the lowest was only halfway between the highest and the lowest. I managed the first two hills but after that it just got too steep. I seriously never seen roads that steep. Also the dirtroad here was just a small track which could only fit one car. This was no problem cause on the first half of my trip I only saw two cars anyway. The thought of pushing my bike up these hills for another 45 km's in the 35 degree sun was not a pleasant though. But, I was not gonna give up. I at least had to make the village of my 15 year old friend. Downhill was not as nice as you might think either. Very steep rocky roads with bad breaks doens't make for a high speed decent. But after a couple of hours I made it to the village where my friend was nowhere to be found. Some asking around brought me to a Swiss guy who lives 6 months in this village and 6 months in Switserland. I met him on the boat too the day before and chatted a bit with him untill the boy came back. Friendly guy who doesn't mind living without electricity and running water.

A bit later I met up with Apisai Boila (the boy) who showed me around. Some elderly people invited me and imediately gave me some food. I gave them some kava which was well received. After a photosession I set out to master some more hills again. The vilagers told me there where only two more steep hills left untill I came to the ferry landing from where it would be relatively easy. Another four hours later I finally made it back with two huge bruzes on my butt. But those were well worth the experiance.

Boy, did I sleep well that night!!
