We arrive in Mancora, a small beach resort in the north of Peru, after a long bus journey and are glad to see the hostel waiting to pick us up to take us to the hostel. We then somehow manage to cram 4 people, 4 backpacks and numerous bags into an old, battered VW beetle and slowly crawl up the dirt track to the hostel.  The hostel is called Kon Tiki Bungalows, it has rooms and bungalows overlooking the town and bay.  It's rustic (i.e. basic) but has character and is a good place to relax away from the town.  We didn’t get up to much in Mancora as its main attraction is the beach, so each day we would spend a few hours on the beach (as long as Jonny could stand), a couple hours relaxing in the hammocks at the hostel and then trying the different restaurants and bars with Jo and Jon.  Jonny and Jon did try surfing once, but let’s just say it didn’t go too well and we will be looking for a beach with lessons.  Although I did enjoy watching all the surfers, as there were plenty of show offs and at this beach they guarantee that you will stand on your first lesson (although the instructor does hold the board so it’s probably a good bit easier – I wouldn’t know, getting bruised and battered by the sea isn’t my idea of fun).

We definitely all enjoyed the restaurants – very good seafood and fish, something we haven’t had much of for a while.  Very tasty king prawns and tuna steaks top the list, and then the cocktails were pretty good – passion fruit sours were the favourites.

Definitely enjoyed our break in Mancora but we did realise that it’s best to go at the weekends (not Mon to Wed) as the day we were leaving a lot more bars and restaurants were opening up for the weekend crowd and it has a reputation for being a big party place – a side of Mancora we didn’t see.
