It took three days to ride out of the Black Forest to Mannheim (very industrial area), where I stayed for a day to rest/avoid rain. Frankfurt was next on my itinerary. I generally dislike riding into large cities, but this wasn't so bad. For a city with skyscrapers, it didn’t seem all that crowded to me. As an added bonus, the hostel was in the middle of the red light district (it was amusing to sit in the lobby and watch all the drug-ravaged people drag themselves along). Somehow, I always find myself in the worst neighborhoods of cities (Athens, too). Maybe I am to blame for choosing the cheapest hostels…nah, that can’t be it.

Well, Frankfurt is rather nice, as cities go. The river going through it is lined by parks and bike paths, where one can get a good view of the skyline. The place feels somewhat more spacious and modern than other European cities I have visited, so maybe I like the change. I visited a nature museum (dinosaur bones…cool!) and the Frankfurt Zoo. Impressive zoo, though I guess they did have to build it up and replace a few animals after we bombed the place to death in WWII (sorry, you Nazi zebras).
