The Amalfi Coast is too far to bike to from Naples, so I dropped down to the city of Salerno. From there, I was able to bike the 25 miles to the trailhead of the Path of the Gods, a great trail along the coast. I biked up to Bomerano, where the trail starts at 2000 feet. From there it was about a six mile hike down to sea level in the town of Positano. I hadn't originally intended on going all the way to Positano. With the heat and near 100% humidity in addition to my soft feet that are unaccustomed to much hiking, I wasn’t sure that it would be a good idea to attempt such an adventure. I couldn’t resist though, and as long as my feet held up, I kept going. It took me 2.5 hours on the way out and 3.5 hours on the way back.

Just the bike ride to the trailhead took me 2.5 hours, so by the time I reached Positano, I was famished. I treated myself to some lasagna and local fish dishes in a restaurant right next to the touristy beach in town. With all that food in storage, I headed on up the 1500 steps back to the Path of the Gods trail. God, I hate humidity. I was completely soaked in sweat, and it was dripping off every part of my body, all to no avail. I had to stop and rest in the shade numerous times on the way back, but even then, I never really managed to cool down. The worst part was knowing that I would have 25 miles to go by bike even after completing the hike. Yeah, I know I can be stupid sometimes, but I did make it.

The same can’t be said for my camera, however. During the heavy sweating on the return hike, I was carrying my camera in my hand. Apparently, it didn’t like that. When I tried to take a picture back on the trail, the damn $400 camera wouldn’t turn on. Fabulous. Even after a thorough drying back at the hostel, it still didn’t work. It thus looks as if I will be without a camera until I can purchase a new one. That will have to be later, though, for I take the train (well, three trains, to be accurate) to Brindisi tomorrow. From there, I will be riding a ferry for 16.5 hours to Patras, Greece.

Toxic sweat. You should have that checked out.

Hah, is that something like restless leg syndrome? At least it only seems to affect me in really humid places...none of that in Cali
