My first morning I awoke to a coating of ice on my tent. All that rain the day before had apparently solidified due to the extreme warmth of the night. Yes, but my sleeping bag has certainly proven itself! There was very dense fog until 9 am, which I got to experience with getting on the road by 7. Best thing: first night's stay cost me nothing! Reception at the campground was closed when I got in, closed when I left.

I got out into the country and away from traffic after some harrowing riding for the first 30 miles. Nothing like having tons of traffic, with semi-trucks wanting to pass with no shoulder. I am really impressed by the driving here though. I have held up a lot of traffic my first two days here, but nobody even honked a horn in frustration...or ran me over :) The country is quite pretty once you get away from people...same everywhere, I guess.

By the time I made it to the campground, I had done 84 miles, which was too much, really. I had six miles to go and I pretty much bonked. That is, I ran out of energy, and it isn't a good feeling. Never happened to me before, but I felt quite weak all over, and couldn't ride. A stop for some food and I went on. Only got a mile before I had to stop and lie down due to dizziness...isn't this how everyone spends their vacations? Haha, I did make it eventually, and lesson learned: eat more. I did so at a pub that night, but you quickly notice that prices in this part of the world are really something. Dinner cost me $30!

The next morning I took a walk under the white cliffs...check that box. Then it was a ride on the ferry over to Calais, France and a stay in the hostel there for two nights. A couple bikers were on the ferry with me; they were headed to Brussels from near London (~200 miles), and trying to do it all in a 24 hour period. See, there are crazier people than me!
