An early, traditional French breakfast rescued the girls from near starvation - French bread, yogurt, jam, juice, cheese, hot chocolate and coffee. Our house was right alongside the forest so we went for a great two hour walk through the forest to the Seine River. Rugged up in jackets, gloves and hats we kept on track with the very old stone markers which would have dated back a few hundred years to when the kings hunted in the forest. The girls found a fantastic big kids playground on the river so all happy.

We set off for Beaune in the afternoon. Genevieve was very excited as we passed through snow on the roadside and surrounding countryside. We made the fatal mistake when arriving at the tourist office to try and find accommodation for the four of us in one room, under 100 euro in the centre. We ended up at the most awful 2 star hotel on the outskirts. Another 30 euro would have found us a palace in comparison – never again. We had a marginal dinner in the hotel dining room with the girls not even able to keep their eyes open. I had to take Felicity back up to the room and feed her in bed. Simon renamed the Comfort Hotel, the Dog's Arse Hotel on the Planet Uranarse. He was sure that the walls were covered in asbestos and even went to ask at the desk however that conversation was always going to get lost in translation. Lesson – arrive at a destination with children fed and before 3pm so you can check out accommodation and not be desperate!
