We unfortunately had to go back through Paihia on the way back to Auckland. We'd decided to take the West Coast and stop at the Kauri forests on the way down. Our first stop of interest was Omapere and Opononi on the Hokianga Harbour. A very cool place that had some huge sand dunes over the far side of the harbour and a nice walk on the bluffs just above Omapere.

The Kauri Forest was a bit disappointing. There are only a few designated walks what every one does, this is actually to protect the ground around the trees. The trees were great, including Tane Mahuta, the largest tree in New Zealand.

We stopped for coffee and ice cream on the way down before arriving back in Auckland. After another quick visit to see our friends Baker and Heidi it was back to the airport and the Jet Park hotel and homeward bound!
Bye bye New Zealand – what a top place and trip!
Not too many new birds to add for the final new days - we got to see so many earlier there probably weren't too many left. Got to next entry to see full list and how much all this fun cost us!
Canada Goose
New Zealand Dotterel
Little Blue Penguin
