Portobello Caravan Park

First day of 2011 and it was a misty and overcast morning. We went to have a quick look at the penguins before heading off to Purakaunui Falls. It was a great walk through a totara forest to get to the falls and out of all the falls we went to these would probably be classed as the most spectacular!

We kept on driving with our next stop the spectacular Nugget Point, Well worth the detour. There were a few New Zealand Fur Seals along the way but the highlight, for sure is the view from the lighthouse out to sea and these lovely rocks, or 'Nuggets' that were dotted around beneath some of the sheer cliffs.

Our goal was to get to Dunedin to find ice cream for Erica that day. We did however make one more stop at the spectacular Tunnel Beach. Phew it’s a haul down and back up but well worth it. There are some views on the way down of a great piece of rock that juts out with caves and land bridge where the water has washed underneath it. It’s called tunnel beach though because there is a longish tunnel with steps that was dug out that leads you down to one of the beaches!

After a few laps around Dunedin and realising all the shops were closed we headed out to Portobello on the Otago Peninsula. There is a great winding road that gets you there that runs right along the waters edge! The motor camp there is a great little place with friendly staff and good clean facilities with well-priced internet.
