In the old city of Aleppo there are many hidden secrets, and more than in any other city I've ever been you'll be able to find a Kaaba above most doors, especially in some parts of town... if you're lucky you'll find the mysterious synagogue too. In the bazaar--which is still being used as it always has been--the strangest characters are these men sitting in one-room shops with wooden paneling and nothing inside except a table for them to sit at... I was not able to figure out or find out what they could possibly be doing there with no sign on the door or inside and no apparent merchandise inside to be sold... I'll have to return to find out.

Comments
If those men were sitting on their own in the bazaars and perhaps with rosaries (although I don't know why they would choose such a noisy place), they might have been meditating. Another thing Aleppo is known for is the "awliya," which literally means friends but refers to friends of God, i.e those who immerse themselves in gnosis.
