Day 2: The end of the bike trip.

I write this a week after the event.

We broke camp from Carpinteria State Beach around 7.30 am and headed north on highway 101 to a very nice cafe / restaurant called "Summerland Beach Cafe" just south of Santa Barbara where we had breakfast.

Summerland Beach Cafe was built as a victorian house in 1893 and has maintained its charm to this day.

But..... we should have realised that the day was not goint to run smoothly. The waitress accidentally knocked iced water over Clives lap. She did apologise but said "this never happens to me" - I replied " Dont worry we have that kind of affect on people"!!!!

After breakfast we headed north took a quick stop at Guadalupe for a coffee before making tracks for Monterey.

Just before midday disaster struck. Just beyond the brow of a hill a dog (brown and white) ran across the road in front of me. Although I was able to brake and avoid the dog I lost control and at 50 mph the bike slipped from underneath me.

Roy travelling behind also braked suddenly and seeing me go down also lost control of the bike.

I dont recall much after this other than unsuccessfully trying to get back up on all 4's and slumping back down again. Apparently I tried this a few times before giving up in pain. The next I remember is being taken care of in Arroyo Grande Hospital. I was finally discharged 5 hours later with 7 broken ribs and a broken collar bone.

Roy also went to hospital with cuts and major bruises.

Imust put on record that it was Roy and Clive that looked after me making sure I got in to a hotel that night. The next day we travelled to San Francisco for 2 nights before flying home early.

Roy / Clive - Thank you very much for looking after me when clearly you had your own injuries and shock to deal with yourselves.
