So here we are, safe and sound in our hostel in Sao Paulo.Overnight
bus was a bit of a nightmare - we ended up leaving pretty much at
midnight and getting here 5.30 this morning. People had told us the
buses in South America are really good, but that wasn`t the case last
night. The seats were comfy and there was this crazy leg thing that you
pulled down from the seat in front that sort of changed the seat into a
bed, but the driver was so pedal heavy you couldn`t help but slide off
the seat every 5 minutes resulting in hardly any sleep. So, Sao
Paulo. 16 million people, rife with crime, pollution, prostitution.
People have told us there isn`t that much to do here, and the guide
book tells us it is very dangerous in certain areas. At night it is
actually legal to go straight through a red light if there is nothing
coming as car-jacks and robberies are so common. So far we have
had a little bit of hassle - guys trying to be "too friendly" asking if
we need a hand in the bus stop - but it doesn`t seem too bad. We were
speaking to an American the other day who lived here for 6 months and
didn`t have a single problem.Supposedly the one thing that is
good in Sao Paulo is the drinking / clubbing scene, so these 2 gringo`s
are going to check that out tonight!
