Today was a sad day. We awoke to the news that there had been a whale stranding the night before last. We decided to head up to Opoutere Beach to see if they needed volunteers to help try and save some of the 74 pilot whales which had beached themselves. However we arrived to find that most of the whales had died. The Department of Conservation volunteers had managed to refloat about 15 successfully but the rest couldn't be saved.

It was a depressing sight watching the bodies being dragged away. They were buried in the dunes behind the beach.
