The High Life - Hotel Melia Bali...

"Is the hotel busy at the moment?" i ask the barman.
"Oh yes" he replys, as i look round to check that i'm the only person in here. Another guy comes back with the cigarets he just went out to get me, "Where you from?"
"London"
"Oh London, lovely jubley".

This is our first of four days staying at an up market resort in Nusa Dua, South Bali (The Hotel Meli Bali) courtesy of Stace' parents (Her mum is coming out to meet us for Stace' 21st birthday). This area doesn't even feature in any of the guide books because it's too expensive and of no interest to backpackers. We arrived very late last night, tired and dirty and looking very out of place, after a long journey and a lot of waiting around, and were met with suitably impressive surroundings and service. Stace was feeling ill - which is normal because she hasn't been ill for at least a week so it was about that time - so i went for a walkabout to check out our new and expensive home for the next four days.

The resort is so clean, i came to the place with the grubbiest name i could find, 'Jungle Pub'; it stays open slightly later than anywhere else, and has a pool table and plays soft rock music, but i still feel like i'm practically graffiting the walls just by lighting a cigarette...

...Peter Framton 'oh Baby i love your way' comes on and instantly reminds me of High Fidelity. As i chat to the barman about my extensive itinerary over the coming months and watch him get out bottles of this and that, and put out ash trays etc.. it reminds me that i always wanted to run a bar...

...'Hotal California by The Eagles comes on and Agos (the barmans name i picked up from his name tag, (yes this is the kind of place where the staff wear name tags)) starts singing along, but tactfully changing to lyrics to 'Hotel Melia Bali'... "we are all prisoners here... of our own device". I like Agos. I was just thinking of asking the guy who got the cigarettes if he wanted a game of pool, on the pre-racked table, but i remembered i have to go pick up Stace' mum, Debbie from the Airport.

So we all stayed at the hotel for four days, only leaving the resort once for a quick shopping trip to nearby Kuta. We ate good food, drank expensive drinks, sunbathed and mingled with the couples and familys that were on their week or two package holiday. I'm not sure if most of the other guests left the resort at all or not, but if they didn't it would have been a long way to travel to miss out on a lot. It was good to know that after they had all left i would still have up to another ten months to bum around before heading home.
