The Gili Islands sit just off the northwestern coast of Lombok and can be reached in about an hour and a half from Bali using a private fast boat in lieu of the public ferries which will add several hours to the journey. The draw are the quiet days, crystal clear blue waters, no motorized vehicles (even the ice cream man rides a bike with a small cooler attached and a car battery to operate the universal ice cream man music - no kidding), and a simple island life where deciding where to relax next usually becomes the hardest decision of the day.
There are 3 islands in the chain and each has picked up an unofficial reason for going there. Gili Trawangan (sits furthest from the mainland and attracts the party crowd), Gili Meno (the island in the middle of the chain, smallest in size, and most uninhabited attracts those looking for an escape), and Gili Air (closest to Lombok and attracting primarily families). We choose Gili Meno. There's that getting old thing again...
We spent a week there. Jon brushed up on his scuba diving skills and got a couple of very nice dives in. Liz snorkeled. We both did a lot of reading, roaming the island's nearly empty beaches, had some great seafood, and remembered what it was like to have a nearly clear head.
We'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Enjoy!
Until next time,
Jon and Liz
