As we headed north up the western boarder of Turkey, a stop in Dogubayazit was essential. (It's pronounced "doh-oo-bay-yah-zuht." If you give up, do what we did and just call it "dog biscuit.") The city has 2 things on offer - the incredibly scenic Ishak Pasa Palace and fabulous views of Turkey's highest mountain, Mt Ararat. It also has a sizable military presence as the city sits nestled very closely to both the Iranian and Armenian borders. As we walked down from the palace we also obtained cherished views of a large tank and artillery base. We'd love to share some pictures, but as you might imagine the soldiers tend to be a bit grumpy when it comes to taking pictures of them or their equipment.
We spent an enjoyable night here before continuing to move north.
Enjoy!
