Hasankeyf.  Another nice little village with an amazing old rock-cut city in ruins high on a cliff above the Tigris River.  The people were friendly and the stop off was well worth it, but it was hot.  Really hot.  The kind of hot that encourages you to be up before the sun, get back under cover by 9am and do nothing until 5am the next morning.  It didn't even cool down at night.  Which provides me with a story.

The only place to stay in town is quite basic, but would have been more than fine had it not been for the fact that we were the only ones in the 4 occupied rooms that didn't get a fan.  Not sure why.  I guess we should have asked before we figured out we needed one.  Liz managed to sleep, but I managed to stay awake and sweat.  Buckets.  How did I know others had a fan and we did not?  Well, at midnight I almost ended it all by throwing myself off the balcony into the river below.  I would have died, but the split second of cooling water covering my body before my nervous circuits stopped connecting would have seemed worth it.  After I decided that my thoughts were becoming far too irrational I took a peek over the balcony and into the next room.  Much to my disgust there sat a fan blowing cool air onto a much too comfortable fellow traveler.  It was then that I began to believe that it would be much more sensible to kick in his door, whisk him out of bed, toss HIM over the balcony and steal HIS fan.  Lack of sleep and heat is a bad combo my friends.

At any rate, I survived, our neighbor probably slept like a baby, and for the first time in my life I was thrilled to dress the next morning at 5am to go sightseeing.  You know what?  It was worth it...

Enjoy!
