Maybe we jinxed ourselves.  Air India from Chicago was posted as delayed for two hours when we arrived at the airport - no big deal.  In fact, pretty much par for the course these days on just about any airline it seems.  We finally boarded two and a half hours late and sat on the plane anxiously awaiting our departure.  Shortly, the captain informed us that they were having a problem getting one of the 4 engines started.  Hey, who are we to complain?  Frankly, I always prefer they have engine problems while on the ground.  So we sat and were served dinner.  We sat some more.  And....you guessed it - they canceled the flight.  We were lucky enough to get a hotel at the airport and spend a nice night hoping that all would be better in the morning.  It was.  We were put on a Lufthansa flight that left and flew flawlessly from Chicago to Frankfurt and a Turkish Airlines flight from Frankfurt to Istanbul.  Here we are!

Istanbul is a wonderful mix of ancient and modern.  It seems a little conservative, a bit more moderate - even a dash of liberal from time to time.  In fact, it simply isn't easy to describe.  You feel like you are a million miles away and then turn the corner and it almost feels like home.  We'll let the pictures do some of the talking.

Suffice to say we are here and excited to begin this journey throughout the next couple of months.  The getting around seems fairly straightforward - most of the time.  The people are certainly friendly.  Language is often a barrier, but nothing a quick game of charades can't cure.

From here we head south on an 11 hour bus trip to the city of Bergama.  While we've enjoyed Istanbul it is always nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of a big city and go where the pace of life is slow.  It's this and much more we hope to find when we arrive at our next destination.  We'll tell you if we are successful when we post again.

Until next time...
