Arrived in the pale cold dawn in Xi'an just before 8 a.m.  Our new guide was Julie, she was typical of the people of Xi'an. In our experience Xi'an is the most sophisticated city we visited in China. Our driver Mr Teng was the same. His van was well maintained and very tidy compared to our Beijing van.
We went firstly to the Grand New World Hotel for booking in and breakfast. Julie then took us to the south gate of the City Wall. It was starting to snow. At the foot of the stairs to the top of the wall was a magnificent display of New Year Dragons made of silk. On top of the wall were more dioramas of scenes from other countries in the world. The displays were also made of silk and were illuminated at night to make a truly spectacular show. This display was over a kilometer long. New Zealand and Australia were represented.
Our next tour was to the Great Goose Pagoda. There was a pleasant feeling temple here known as Ci'en Si. The carving work was amazing at the temple and there were Chooks wandering around the Stele yard to one side of the temple. The Pagoda ( Dayan Ta ) itself looked huge, and of the closed eave type. An impressive 64m building built in 625 a.d.
Next we were off to the Shaanxi History Museum. This museum was interesting and well worth the visit. The terracotta warrior section was great and many of the ornaments were stunning. I bought a bronze flying horse from a stall outside the Museum.
In the Evening we went to a Dumpling dinner and cultural show. This was a great night out at the Tang Dynasty Show. We had 17 types of Jiaozi ( Dumplings ) and a fantastic show. Costumes, dancers and music were all top class. This was a real treat.
