Flag of Italy  , Italian Riviera,
Monday, May 31, 2010

On Monday, we hiked the opposite way and visited Riomaggiore. (Boat travel was out due to rough seas.) This part of the path was very well maintained, fairly flat and was called the Via dell' Amore. There was some tradition of good luck (I assume) if you leave a lock with yours and your lover’s name on it. We have pictures of locks left all over this path!

Once in Riomaggiore, I found a pizzeria/foccaciaria that sold farinata – a fried chickpea snack that I read about. We sampled the zucchini and onion variety and it reminded me of my grandmother’s potato pancakes. It is made in a large deepdish pizza pan, they cut a piece off, weigh it and charge you by weight. (I’m going to have to google this and see if I can make a variety at home.) It was still early, so Pat bought his Italian straw hat, we stopped for espresso, then we resumed our hike past this town.

It could have gone on for hours, but we stopped at a vista about a half hour away - about as far as you could see from Riomaggiore. This was the nature part of the hike. There were all sorts of native plants, cacti and flowers growing. I only shreiked once or twice when I saw a couple large black flying things a little too close for comfort.

On the way back, I had to get more farinata (one to eat, one for breakfast). Pat also decided to strip down and jump into the Meditteranean for a swim. He said the current was strong, so I’m glad I took a pass.

We weren't allowed back into the hostel until 4, so right on the dot, Pat headed for a nap and I did 2 loads of laundry. Sometimes it pays to be a napper. We dried all of our clothes outside on the balcony, and out our window - how European!

We had another seafood dinner at the bottom of the hill then called it a night. We had a magnificent time and the Cinque Terre is all that we expected and more. Thanks Rick Steves!
