After leaving Kakadu we went a short distance down the road to the town of Katherine. We quickley booked in a campsite on the edge of the gorge and went for an afternoons canoe.

We hired a double canoe, this enabled me to have a rest every now and then!(although still didn't help the aches and pains the next day). The gorge was beautiful and so peaceful. When you reach the end of gorge one (there are 14 altogether but we only had time for 2) there are some rapids/falls. When hiring the canoes they instruct you to get out of the canoe at this point and walk them through. This is easier said than done. Due to my footwear being more suitable we agreed that John would get out and climb over the rocks with the stuff we didn't want to get wet, whilst I would master the rapids.

There were three sets of rapids - each one prooving to be harder than the last. At one point I gave up and tried to swim pulling the canoe along (this does not work). I have to admit I havn't had such good fun in ages - must have been a nightmare for John waiting for me, watching me laughing. You may wonder why he didn't do it - well he only had flip-flops (thongs for you aussies) on and the rocks were really slippery. My shoes strap on - may not be fasionable but come in handy sometimes!

On the way back John had a go but it is a lot simplier going down the rapids! At the end of the day we were very tired and enjoyed a quiet night preparing for a rather long trip across to the east coast.
