we went to thailand only for two reasons: the first was tigers and the second was fishing. Lenka had a lot of fun with the tigers the other day and now it was my turn. We've been to thailand before and the last year we did a lot of fishing around Bangkok but we did not have a clue what to expect from Chiang Mai because we did not use any guide services this time and we only found one place that had a full access to the water and had fishing 24 hours including spinning and fly fishing.

Thailand is very well know as a fishing disneyland not only for the number of different opportunities to fish but mainly for the variety of the species that are available. there are lot of resorts offering all inclusive packages for angles who want to target exotic species without the need of flying all around the world at a relatively reasonable prices. this is not unique in the region of SE Asia but is at the highest standard and is well known in the angling world.

we had to wake up pretty early as the owner picked us up already 6 am (not complaining at all) and at 7 am we were already at our bungalow setting up the rods and casting them with the hope of catching something. the dreamlake is rather a normal lake where you have to work to get a fish and it requires some skills and luck especially with being there in the slow season. however another guy who stayed at the resort had caught already 10 fish that morning so it was looking really promising.

I did not expect anything but was really hoping to catch at least one of the 3 species that i was hoping for: snakehead, packu and striped catfish -  and maybe the ultimate prize - arapaima. the day started rather slow but in the evening i already had several fish and we enjoyed really great dinner as the owner was german and of course they had to have german cuisine in their menu.

the days became routine with early start at 5am, delicious breakfast around 8 am followed by brunch at 11 am consisting of coconut and water melon shakes. for lunch we used to have a delicious thai salad and in the evening big dinner usually from german cuisine. all was prepared by the owners wife and we totally loved it and in the 5 days there we gained quite a bit of weight.

as the fishing was getting a bit slow on the forth day we went to another lake that stocked mainly mekong catfish and in the 4 hours we were there i was doing nothing but pulling the fish out. it was no fishing but hard work as the catfish were biting and even if i lost quite a few i was fighting the fish pretty much all the time and at least 3 times i had in immediate bite straight after casting. it did not required any skill only stamina and strength as the small fish were around 10 kg and it took at least 5 minutes to pull it out. i caught at least a couple that were over 40 kg and lost a few that may have been even bigger. I was quite glad to be back to the dreamlake and doing the real fishing.

in the evening my patience was rewarded and I managed to land a snakehead. it was an amazing experience but when i handled the fish my knee snapped and i still have problems with it. the 5 days went by very fast and we will definitely come back and we already wish we stayed longer as Lenka was fishing 2 days as well and as usual she caught more fish than i did :)
