Eating up the miles (kilometers?) on the way out of Ottawa, I headed northwest on Canada 17 towards Sudbury.  The beautiful Ottawa River was on my right and I motored along admiring the scenery and the lack of people and traffic.  Eventually it became time for fuel and a rest break and I started looking for a good place to stop. There were many road signs touting the qualities of a placed called Pembroke so I rolled the dice and took a right turn off of Canada 17.   My goals was to find fuel, take a quick break and get back on the road.

I must have missed a sign or two because I quickly found myself mired on the main street of a typical northern resort/recreation town.  Narrow streets, heavy stop-and-go traffic, kitschy and artsy shops and lots of people walking up and down the sidewalks giving the big guy on the loud Harley nasty looks.  I couldn't find any indication of how to get back to 17 or any other main drag and so I just stuttered along the street looking for someplace, any place to turn around and/or get back to the main highway.

Eventually I got through downtown and found myself near a park.  I pulled off, parked and took a rest. The park was very nice - large and basically empty. I could sense that the river was nearby but I couldn't see it.  After 15 or 20 minutes I was rested but still had no clue how to get back to 17.  That's one of the problems of motorcycle touring with no cell phone, GPS or other technical gadget...you can't carry a map for everyplace but you don't always want the trappings of modern society, either.  I wandered around and eventually found a parks building staffed with some teenagers.  I asked them for directions and they gladly found me a brochure with a rudimentary map in it and showed me where I was and what I needed to do get back to 17.
