Where I stayed
Heading out of St. John, I'm feeling a little bit better but still not 100%. The weather is not helping, it is cold and gray and a little drizzly. Not enough to get soaking wet but enough to see it on the windshield of the Harley and on my face shield. I am making good time but as I get closer to Norton, NB I start feeling worse and worse.
Suddenly, my worst fear: I have to puke and I have to puke now but I'm traveling at 70 MPH in the middle of Nowhere, New Brunswick, Canada. I slow down as quickly as I can but I'm not going to make it so I pop the face shield, lean over and let fly, hoping that I don't get any on the bike or my backpack riding behind me. Note to self: puking on a motorcycle is not fun, avoid in the future!
I pull off on the shoulder of the road to get my wits back. I had passed a billboard advertising a gas station in a few kilometers so I decide to go there. A few kilometers later and I roll into the Norton One Stop at exit 124 on Route 1. I'm actually feeling better now that I've puked but I realize I am just not going to make it to Halifax.
I go into the One Stop and find a payphone because my mobile phone doesn't work in Canada. I call the Best Western in Halifax and cancel my reservation for the night. Luckily the gas station has wi-fi so I start trying to find someplace close to layover and get better. At this point all I really need is a bed and a toilet but if I can find something reasonable I will go for it. The nearest big city is Moncton and I find a Best Western there so I call and make a reservation.
I take 30 minutes to sit outside in the fresh air and drink some water before getting back on the road. My goal now is Moncton, about 90 minutes away. If I make it I will be getting there early, about 2 PM. I am hoping they will let me check-in early so I can take a nap.
The ride to Moncton is thankfully uneventful and I roll into the Best Western at about 2 PM as planned. Checking in, the desk clerk is very helpful and happy to let me check in early. She sees that I have platinum status and immediately upgrades me to a suite. I ask her for something far away from any noise and she tells me "no problem".
Going up to the room, I find it very very nice. Probably the best room I've ever stayed in. It is all I can do to not fall right on the bed and crash. Instead I unpack and take off my road clothes before hitting the bed for a nap.
