Kevin, a friend from Washington who comes and stays in Noosa each year, picked us up from the airport and drove us back to DC. Which is quite a long way from Dulles Airport, there is an airport called Ronald Regan Nation which is only a few minutes from his house K which we should have flown into - had we know we could have done so. Oh well we will know better next time.
Kevin lives in Alexandria, Virginia. It's a beautiful historic town about 10 mins out of Washington downtown. This is probably the most beautiful city we have seen in North America, clean streets, great metro, well dressed people, and great facilities..... hmmm I could definitely live here.
Day 1
We take a guided tour of the old town of Alexandria with Kevin - its amazing how much history a place can have - we are so used to thinking of 50-100 years as old, but everything here dates back to the late 1700's.
We also do a tour of DC on the Metro and visit a number of Museums - my favourite is the Aerospace Museum. See the pics. We also go to the main library of Congress which is quite amaizing, some 128 million books. We have dinner with one of Kevin's neighbours, John, who has a very historic home of his own. It's a great evening and we really enjoyed learning more about American History and the local history of Alexandria from John.
Day 2
We continue our tour of Museums and Monuments seeing the Lincon Monument, the ..... big needle?? And others.
Day 3
We take a bike tour of the city seeing even more monuments and ending up having lunch in the beautiful are of .......
Where I attempt to put Kevin out of action by crashing into him on his bike. He is the only one that comes out injured... sorry Kevin! Anyway the rest of the day goes a little better and we have a great day out and lots of exercise. This is a really good way to get a feel for this very beautiful city.
Day 4
We have a day of rest! Yay! And our fairwell dinner. John comes over for dinner and we have a really great night. We will really miss Alexandria, DC, Kevin and John. We felt very much at home with Kevin and this was one of the real highlights of our journey so far.
