It was a misty morning along the coast.

At Big Sur we met Judy and Ivan and hiked with them up to the waterfall and then climbed to its top. A bit further and we got lost, but then found a dusty slide down the hill to a natural pool where we had a refreshing skinny dip.

Continuing on Route 1 we came to Carmel and Monterey where we picked up a hitch-hiker, Dick, a student trying to get to Berkeley: he was a really nice guy.

We bought fruit in Salinas Valley.  In England grapefruit were still a relatively luxurious commodity – they were generally eaten a half at a time.  Here they must have been in season as they were in great piles alongside the road.  The very ripe ones were just dumped for people to take away.  We took them and gorged ourselves.

Ray knew someone at Berkeley but could not make contact.  However we met a couple who invited us to stay in their attic.  It was an evening of pipe smoke, poetry reading, and playing cards.
