(New York City, Saturday, December 30, 2006)-Sunny and Beyonce had to leave New Haven on the 28th to drive back to real life in the former Motor City and turn in the rent-a-car before New Year's Eve descended. But Dr D and I had the luxury of laying up at my sister's for two more days and hanging out with Sarhanna and Kashalla some more. I kept feeding Kathy's brilliant CDs into my iBook and then parking my whole .mp3 music collection on my brand new 250-GB external hard drive.

While I was slurping up Miles Davis' entire output for Prestige Records between Christmas Eve 1954 and the end of 1956, it occurred to me that this is how I started out as a college student almost 50 years ago, playing the Miles Davis albums over and over again and trying to figure out the exact provenance of the marathon May and October 1956 sessions that produced four of the greatest albums of all time: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet.

My early excursions into discographical research, back in the day when a whole lotta companies wouldn't put the session information on the sleeves of their reissued albums so you would have to think it was a new release, and when Atlantic Records, for example, would never print the recording dates at all, led me onto a path I've followed faithfully ever since, even unto these holiday afternoons in New Haven at the tail end of 2006. Thank you!

On Saturday evening Professor Arturo drove over from his refugee base in Stamford CT to pick up Dr D and me in New Haven and drive us into New York City to close out the year and begin the new one. Our pal Jerry Poynton has agreed to house us for the first week of 2007, and we settle into his fine pad on Fifth Avenue to put yet another year behind us, and to toast the beginning of our first year together. And that's it for 2006....
