Since November 2004 I've been doing an internet radio program called the John Sinclair Radio Show. We stage the shows in coffeeshops, bars and other venues, record them to disc, make one-hour shows out of the recordings, and post them on-line at www.johnsinclairradio.com.
At the beginning of 2005 we expanded the project to become Radio Free Amsterdam, with the goal of building a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week streaming radio station with independent program productions gathered from all across the USA and the world. The non-profit arts organization named EPISODES signed on to sponsor Radio Free Amsterdam as a communicating arts project, and soon afterward we signed up with the new podcasting technology to podcast our programs as they were posted.
I created an archive site for my program at my personal website, www.johnsinclair.us, and now have 77 programs stored there, each with its own page, program description and playlist. The shows combine great musical selections with interviews of all sorts and free-form commentary by the host and his cast of characters. While I'm touring in the U.S. I make programs called "joint productions" with people all over the country. When my website returns to cyberspace you can check these out for yourselves.
We also have a fine arts interview show called ImageMakers hosted by Anthony Murrell of Stichting EPISODES, with 16 episodes posted to date; 22 episodes of Tom Morgan's Jazz Roots show from WWOZ, New Orleans; 6 episodes of the Amsterdam-based original production called Cosmic Paradigm Shift with Marx Marvelous; 2 episodes of the Global Open Mike Show with Amanda, also an RFA original production; 2 episodes of the Yaw Show, an RFA production directed at listeners in Ghana; a special production from Amsterdam called Senor Juan Bots Culture Shock Roller Derby; and our first of what we hope to be many episodes of Live from the Red Rooster Lounge with Cary Wolfson of Boulder, Colorado.
This week our producer, engineer and web operator Henk Botwinik has posted several new episodes:
[1] John Sinclair Show #77
[2] Global Open Mike #2 with Amanda
[3] Cosmic Paradigm Shift #6 with Marx Marvelous
[4] Accidental Monday #2 Live at the Sugar Factory.
Other current podcasts are [1] Tom Morgan's Jazz Roots #22 and [2] ImageMakers #16 Live at Hortus Gallery.
Last night (Tuesday) I was with Henk and Sascha when they recorded a long series of interviews with participants at the New Beatnix Generantion gathering at de Kring over the Palladium club on the Leidseplein. This will be part of a new RFA series called ALTERNATIVE AMSTERDAM produced by Henk Botwinik and hosted by Sascha.
We call RFA "guerrilla radio" because we're like a clandestine squadron striking quick and deep, doing the show and getting out with the recording intact. Our initial team of Henk, Larry Hayden and myself would appear at a coffeeshop, set up our laptop and 2-channel mike mixer on a tabletop, hook up our two mikes and two sets of headphones, load in the tunes for the show from the hard drive to the playback program and line them up and fire for an hour until we had a program.
If my website were up right now I could direct you to the radio show archives, but here's a list:
