After Lima I headed to Ica which is near the coast and has these big sand dunes where you can go sand boarding and go on dune buggies and stuff like that. I got a bus with a company called Soyuz which the guy in the hostel in Lima said was ok. 5 hours later I arrived in Ica and got a taxi to a hostel beside the sand dunes. When I got to the hostel I went to get my passport from my small bag but when I put my hand in the compartment at the back I felt nothing so I moved my hand around and big-ball-of-shit, there were my fingers sticking out the side of the bag. Somehow somebody in the seat behind me on the bus had managed to get under my seat and cut the back of my bag which was on the floor between my feet and take the first thing they found which was a Trailfinders wallet I had with my passport, airplane ticket and other travel documents in it. I just couldnŽt believe it. The people in the hostel brought me to the police station and I told them what was taken and they typed it all up and filed it with the rest. Then I went to the bus company and asked them if they could trace the bus from my ticket serial number and get someone to check if my passport was maybe dumped down the side of the seat behind me but they werenŽt much help. I was totally pissed off. The next day was friday and I rang the embassy in Lima in the morning and the guy said IŽd have to come back to Lima to sort it out so I was gonna get a bus straight back but he said that the immigration office was only open from 9-1 so I wasnŽt gonna get to Lima in time so IŽd have to do it on Monday instead. So he said I might as well stay in Ica for the day and go and see the Nasca lines or something and take my mind off it. So I stayed in Ica for the day and went sandboarding on the sand dunesin the afternoon which was deadly...we went off in a dune buggy and the driver had a big tub of grease and he oiled up the sandboards and we went flying down these 50-100 meter sand dunes....first doing it like on a snowboard and then just lying on our stomachs on top of the board which was deadly and cheered me up big time. Then I got the bus to Nasca and the following morning got a small helicopter flight over the lines which was good. After that I was gonna get a bus straight to Lima but the direct one was a bit expensive so I said stuff it, IŽd get a cheap bus back to Ica and go to the Soyuz bus company and tell them that I wanted them to bring me back to Lima for free cos it was on one of their buses that I was robbed. So I was at the desk in the Soyuz station in Ica telling the one behind the counter that I wanted to go back to Lima for free and she said IŽd have to talk to the administrator and then the security guy came over to see what was going on and I told him what happened and he said that his brother had found somebodyŽs travel documents thrown on the street in Ica the day before and he took out a piece of paper from his jacket which said "JHON MORROW" and asked me if it was me. I nearly leapt on the guy! He rang his brother and got him to go back to his house and I got a taxi there and met the him and his wife and there was all my stuff! The relief...I couldnŽt believe it. I dunno if it was my lucky stars or all the prayers to St Anthony but everything was there. So instead of going back to Lima I got the next bus to Cusco, with my passport securely wedged down my jocks - I think IŽll keep it there til I get back to Sydney.
